Recognising and Supporting Nurses and Midwives
10/05/2019
To mark International Nurses Day (12 May), the Southern Trust has launched a new Nursing and Midwifery Action Plan with a number of special celebratory events across the area.
International Nurses Day takes place each year on Florence Nightingales’s birthday as an opportunity for nurses to unite and celebrate together. This year, the Royal College of Nursing has organised the biggest Nursing Party across the UK with the Southern Trust hosting tea parties for nurses and midwives at Craigavon, Daisy Hill, Lurgan, South Tyrone hospitals and the Bluestone Unit.
The Trust’s two year Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Action Plan aims to address some of the challenges facing nursing and midwifery into the future. Interim Executive Director of Nursing for the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Heather Trouton explains:
“In the Southern area we have a fantastic team of dedicated, highly professional and compassionate midwives, nurses and nursing assistants, caring throughout our hospital and community services. Contributing to 36% of our workforce, nurses and midwives are absolutely crucial to delivering safe, high quality health and social care.
“With an ambitious transformation agenda ahead of us, we want to invest in our nursing and midwifery workforce to help them embrace the needs of our growing population and address ongoing challenges like recruitment, retention and the need to continually improve the way we deliver services.”
Trust Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, Vivienne Toal added:
“We are delighted to launch our new Action Plan on International Nurses Day to show our commitment to supporting and developing our present and future nurses and midwives. We want to be the employer of choice for nurses and midwives, to promote a culture where staff are proud of their work and have opportunities for career progression. This plan is the beginning of an improvement journey for the nursing and midwifery workforce in the Southern area, in which we all want to strive together to become even better in delivering high quality care.
“If you are interested in a career in nursing or midwifery, we would love to hear from you.”
